Spurs Downtown Arena Update

The San Antonio Spurs took a major step toward building a new downtown arena after Bexar County voters approved a measure allowing up to $311 million in venue taxes to fund the project. Although several local lawmakers and advocacy groups opposed the proposal, it received just over 52% support from voters, according to county officials.

The Spurs have committed at least $500 million toward the arena's construction, with approximately $489 million expected from the city. The total $1.3 billion plan remains in early development, and no construction timeline has been announced. The team’s current lease at Frost Bank Center extends through 2032.

Player Notes

"Castle is a keeper. Wemby and Harper round out that trio of a nucleus. Vassel is a perfect role player with 3 & D skills. Fox can be trade bait if they choose to do so, and the Atlanta draft pick may be the icing on the cake."

Author's summary: The Spurs move forward on a $1.3 billion downtown arena project backed by voters, while shaping a promising core roster with Castle, Wemby, and Harper.
