Aargau, Switzerland Publishes Online Geothermal Suitability Map

The Canton of Aargau in Switzerland has launched an online map displaying the suitability of various geothermal energy applications. The map provides a strategic basis for investments and project development, encouraging the focused use of geothermal energy across the canton.

Geothermal energy, particularly for shallow heat extraction with ground source heat pumps, already plays an important role in ensuring a sustainable, reliable energy supply and supports the goal of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Recognizing Aargau's favorable geothermal conditions, the Cantonal Government approved a motion from the Grand Council in March 2022 to create a geothermal register. This register aims to identify geothermal potential within Aargau's municipalities.

The Energy Division of the Department of Construction, Transport and Environment, together with internal and external experts, then conducted a detailed study to analyze the geothermal capacity within the canton.
