Former India batter Robin Uthappa shared his view on Jasprit Bumrah’s performance in the second T20I against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Uthappa suggested that Bumrah tends to lose his bowling rhythm when he is too desperate to take wickets.
Speaking on Star Sports, Uthappa noted that Bumrah's rare off day in India's modest defense of 125 runs was linked to this struggle. Although Bumrah took two wickets and gave away 26 runs in four overs, he was not as composed as usual.
"When we were bowling after scoring 125, the start was very important. If we had picked up two or three wickets in the first three or four overs, the game could have been closer because we have quality spinners in the middle overs. I felt we were probably trying too hard to pick up wickets. So we got a little wayward," Uthappa said.
Uthappa analyzed that Bumrah’s occasional waywardness originates from his eagerness to strike early in the innings, which was evident in this match where Australia chased the target comfortably.
Uthappa's observation highlights how the bowler’s intensity to take quick wickets can sometimes disrupt his control and consistency, affecting the team's bowling effectiveness.
Author's summary: Robin Uthappa points out that Jasprit Bumrah’s occasional loss of rhythm stems from over-eagerness to take wickets, impacting his usual disciplined bowling performance.
