If the Dodgers force a Game 7 in the World Series against Toronto, manager Dave Roberts may deploy Shohei Ohtani in unconventional ways. Ohtani, known for his two-way abilities, could serve as an opener or even play in the outfield.
During Wednesday’s Game 4, Ohtani threw 93 pitches in a 6-2 loss but might still be available as a reliever later in the series in Toronto. However, if he pitches relief after starting as a designated hitter, the Dodgers would lose the DH spot. He can maintain the DH role if he starts the game as the pitcher.
“I think we would consider everything,” Roberts said on Thursday ahead of Game 6. “It’s more of just kind of doing whatever we can to get through tomorrow and then pick up the pieces and then see what’s the best way to attack a potential Game 7. So everything should be on the table and will be, for sure.”
Roberts planned to discuss options with Ohtani later on Thursday. While Ohtani has never pitched relief in Major League Baseball, he made some relief appearances in Japan's Pacific League with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters as a rookie in 2013. Notably, he closed out Japan’s win in the 2023 World Baseball Classic final against the United States by striking out Mike Trout.
On Thursday, Ohtani took batting practice on the field behind center field at the hotel, a rare sight.
Summary: Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is open to various roles for Shohei Ohtani in a potential Game 7, including relief pitching or outfield, highlighting Ohtani's versatile impact on the team.
