Varun Chakaravarthy had the final laugh in a psychological battle with Australian batter Tim David during the second T20 International at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
During Australia’s chase of 126 runs on Friday, Tim David came out to bat after captain Mitchell Marsh was dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav in the 8th over. Although Australia seemed to be in control needing 39 runs from 12 overs, the Indian spinners made the chase challenging.
Chakaravarthy, who had already dismissed Travis Head, began an over with an aggressive field setup. Tilak Varma was positioned at forward short-leg, and when David approached, he laughed, sensing pressure tactics from Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav.
David responded cleverly when Chakaravarthy started his run-up by walking away, which irritated the leg-spinner. In return, Chakaravarthy delayed bowling the next ball. The captain and commentators found humor in the exchange.
David eventually scored by pushing the next ball to mid off, but Chakaravarthy struck again by dismissing the hard-hitting batter. David chipped the ball straight to Chakaravarthy, who caught it without error.
“David chipped it straight back to Chakaravarthy, who made no mistakes in gobbling up the simple catch.”
Varun Chakaravarthy’s clever tactics and skillful bowling helped him outwit Tim David and prove decisive in the match.
Author’s note: This episode highlighted how cricket is as much a mental game as a physical contest between players.
