Tom Morris, Channel 9’s leading football reporter, has made a surprising move to join rival broadcaster Channel 7. The switch marks one of the boldest talent acquisitions in recent sports media coverage.
According to Code Sports, the 34‑year‑old journalist informed Channel 9 on Friday morning that he had accepted a lucrative offer from Channel 7. The move was reportedly orchestrated by Seven’s head of sport, Chris Jones, and SEN boss Craig Hutchison.
"Morris will join an already impressive lineup of football talent," the report stated.
Although he is not expected to assume a leading on‑air role—Mitch Cleary will remain Seven’s chief football reporter—Morris will form a strong reporting team alongside Cleary and Xander McGuire, another former Channel 9 recruit.
This marks yet another major win for Channel 7 following its successful approach to Kane Cornes before the 2024 AFL season. Insiders suggest that Morris’s decision was influenced by Seven’s exclusive broadcast rights for both football and cricket. He had been with Channel 9 since January 2024.
Tom Morris’s shift from Channel 9 to Channel 7 reshapes sports journalism in Australia, strengthening Seven’s dominance in coverage of football and cricket.
