Hungary has committed to allowing Russian President Vladimir Putin to enter the country for a summit with US President Donald Trump, scheduled to take place in Budapest, according to Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.
Putin currently faces an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged war crimes. Despite this, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán declared in April that Hungary intends to withdraw from the ICC.
"The government will argue that the warrants have no effect in Budapest."
Trump announced on Thursday his intention to meet Putin in Budapest to discuss efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Dates for the summit are expected to be set following upcoming meetings between US and Russian foreign ministers next week, as stated by Szijjarto.
Donald Trump is also scheduled to discuss with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy the potential provision of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine during a White House meeting on Friday.
"Trump announced on Thursday he would meet Putin in the Hungarian capital to discuss ending the war in Ukraine."
Summary: Hungary supports hosting the Trump-Putin summit by allowing Putin entry despite ICC charges, reflecting its broader rejection of international arrest warrants on its soil.
