Jennifer Lawrence Becomes Muse for Three Contemporary Artists

Jennifer Lawrence has inspired intimate portraits by Wolfgang Tillmans, Elizabeth Peyton, and Philippe Parreno for W Magazine's new portrait series. The collaboration highlights the actor's influence on contemporary art through distinct interpretations by each artist.

Artists and Their Unique Approaches

The series, featured in the Art Issue of W Magazine, continues its tradition since 2006 of presenting notable figures through the eyes of renowned contemporary artists. Past editions include works by Mickalene Thomas photographing Cardi B, Barbara Kruger overlaying text on Kim Kardashian, and George Clooney depicted in Yayoi Kusama’s polka dot style.

Jennifer Lawrence admitted, “I’m not very good at drawing, except for a simple horse head which I can sketch with a childlike flair.”

This time, Lawrence is portrayed by Elizabeth Peyton, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Philippe Parreno, each offering a different visual narrative of the 35-year-old actor.

Editorial Perspective

Sara Moonves, editor in chief at W Magazine, said, “We wanted to work with artists who approach portraiture in different ways and work in different mediums. It was also important that we connected with them on a personal level. Each of them approached the collaboration differently, but with great commitment and care.”
Significance of the Project

The project not only explores diverse artistic styles but also deepens the relationship between contemporary art and celebrity culture, with Jennifer Lawrence serving as a compelling muse.

Author's summary: Jennifer Lawrence inspired three contemporary artists—Tillmans, Peyton, and Parreno—to create unique portraits for W Magazine, blending personal connection with diverse artistic visions.
