Steve Witkoff, the US envoy, stated at the America Business Forum conference in Miami that the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas is prepared to surrender its weapons to an international security force in the Gaza Strip.
He highlighted that Washington is urging Israel to permit Hamas militants, currently besieged in Rafah, southern Gaza, to evacuate the area.
"Hamas has always made it clear that it is ready to hand over its weapons," Witkoff said, referencing discussions with Jared Kushner, advisor to President Donald Trump.
Witkoff expressed optimism that Hamas will honor this commitment, emphasizing the potential benefits:
"If it does, it will realize that the development plan we have for Gaza is truly extraordinary, much better than what was proposed in the past."
The initiative includes a large-scale job creation program aimed at improving conditions in Gaza.
