Jennifer Lawrence has revealed that she and Emma Stone are producing a new film centered on the beloved Muppets character Miss Piggy. The project, currently in early development at Disney, will feature a screenplay by Cole Escola, the Tony-winning writer of the Broadway hit “Oh, Mary!”.
Disney, which holds the rights to the Muppets franchise, is overseeing the film’s early stages. Although Miss Piggy made her first appearance on Jim Henson’s “The Muppet Show” in the 1970s, she has never before been the focus of a standalone feature movie.
During a conversation on the “Las Culturistas” podcast hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, Lawrence said:
“I don’t know if I can announce this but I’m just going to… Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie and Cole is writing it.”
When asked if she and Stone might also appear in the film, Lawrence teased:
“I think so. We have to… It’s messed up that we haven’t done a movie together.”
Speaking later on “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon, Lawrence explained that the concept emerged during pandemic lockdowns. A friend suggested that Miss Piggy, seen by many as a feminist icon, could be part of a story exploring modern cancel culture.
“She said, ‘Miss Piggy is a feminist icon. It would be so funny if Miss Piggy got canceled.’”
Lawrence clarified that this was not the actual plot, but it helped inspire the direction of the film’s development.
Lawrence and Stone are teaming up with Cole Escola on a Disney-backed Miss Piggy film that merges humor, nostalgia, and modern cultural themes.
