Alberta's Rocky View County Issues Fire Advisory Amid Dry Conditions
Alberta’s fire season officially ends on Friday, yet persistent dry weather has prompted new fire advisories in the province's southern regions. Both the east and west sides of Rocky View County face a moderate fire risk due to dry and windy conditions.
Current Fire Risk and Advisory Details
Rocky View County Deputy Fire Chief Bill Messner explains that issuing fire advisories this late in the season is not unusual. He highlights the rapid and unpredictable changes in weather at this time of year.
"This is definitely a period of season where honestly the weather can change very rapidly," said Messner.
The dry conditions have already caused an increase in grass fires over the past week, with up to three occurring in a single day. Some of these might be caused by human factors such as discarded lit cigarettes.
"Please use the proper receptacles. Please don't flick them out of the window. That definitely can cause a lot of issues that way," Messner urged.
Fire Ban and Restrictions
In addition to the advisory, Rocky View County has imposed a fire ban that suspends all existing permits for fireworks and outdoor burns. Exceptions are made for barbecues, camp stoves, and indoor fireplaces.
There is no definite timeline for lifting the advisory, but Messner expects it to remain for at least another week given the ongoing dry weather.
