Gangster ‘Assaults’ Inspector to Evade Arrest, Gets Shot in Leg

Salman Mirza, also known as Salman Lassi, has a decade-long crime record involving 16 cases such as murder, attempted murder, and extortion. He was evading arrest related to the murder of a youth on October 24 in Unn.

On Thursday, officers from the Surat Crime Branch shot Mirza in the right leg when he attempted to assault an inspector while resisting arrest.

Police Operation Details

Following a tip-off, multiple teams from the city’s Crime Branch arrived at Ashiyana Street in Dabhel village, Navsari. The police cordoned off a suspicious house and warned neighboring residents to stay silent.

The accused was found hiding in the backroom of the house, while his wife and children were in the front room. Upon learning of the police presence, Mirza concealed himself in the backroom.

Encounter with the Police

A police officer explained the situation:

“We identified six suspected houses where Salman might be. We checked the first without success. At the second, when questioned about Salman, the woman denied his presence. Meanwhile, Salman tried to escape through the back door where police were already stationed.
Officers instructed him to surrender, but he refused and produced a knife to attack Inspector PK Sodha. Acting in self-defense, Sodha fired at Mirza’s right leg, injuring him. The officers then overpowered and arrested him.”
