Ken Howery, the newly appointed US Ambassador to Denmark, met with King Frederik on Tuesday. Following the audience, Howery spoke to Danish media outside Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen after his official introduction as ambassador.
Howery outlined his priorities, emphasizing the importance of strengthening defense and security cooperation, enhancing trade and investment relations, and collaborating with the Kingdom of Denmark to address shared Arctic security concerns, particularly those related to Greenland.
When asked for a message to the king and Danish people regarding Greenland, an aide interrupted, stating there was no time for a response. Howery promised that comments would be made at a later date.
Regarding whether President Trump's plan to acquire Greenland was off the table, Howery refrained from giving a clear answer.
“I refer you again to what he said about, this is an issue for the Greenlanders to decide.”
He reiterated that his personal focus as ambassador is to find opportunities to collaborate with Denmark on the shared concern of securing the Arctic region.
The new US Ambassador to Denmark emphasizes partnership on Arctic security and defers direct comments on President Trump’s Greenland acquisition plan, highlighting respect for Greenlanders' decision.
