This is the way it is: How Ita is coping with a life-changing condition

Ita, 83, remains positive despite uncertainty following her 2021 back surgery. Shortly after, she noticed symptoms leading to the diagnosis of isolated gait disorder. Now using a wheelchair, Ita adapts to new challenges with resilience.

"I haven't walked properly since the back surgery," Ita shared.

Doctors are unsure if the surgery caused her condition or if it will worsen. Ita relies on others for mobility, which she calls "one of the adjustments" she has had to make.

Instead of focusing on limitations, Ita appreciates the relief from back pain. She chooses to take control of her life rather than feel sorry for herself.

"I can either feel sorry for myself and do nothing, or I can take control of my life, as I always have," she said.

She acknowledges frustration over insufficient funding for research into her illness.

"Life is full of detours," Ita reflected.

Ita recently completed her twelfth book, Unapologetically Ita, a memoir and her first written without balancing a full-time job.

"It was a relief to write a book and discover how much fun it is when you don't have to keep leaving it to go back to the job you do," she said.

Author's summary: Ita faces her condition with a determined spirit, focusing on positivity and creativity despite mobility challenges and ongoing uncertainties.
