The Pitt men’s basketball team overcame an early deficit to defeat Youngstown State 74-59 in their 2025-26 season opener at the Petersen Events Center on Monday night. The Panthers used a decisive 14-3 run to close out the first half and maintained the lead throughout the second half.
Youngstown State controlled the early stages, but Pitt took their first lead at 20-19 with a Cameron Corhen three-point play. The Penguins responded with a 6-0 run, yet Pitt intensified their defense to seize control.
Pitt extended the lead to double digits early in the second half, but Youngstown State rallied with a six-point run to narrow the gap to 54-50.
“Youngstown State went just 1-of-7 shooting with three turnovers over the final 5:34 of the opening half and Pitt used that 14-3 run to take a 34-28 lead into the break.”
This victory marks Pitt’s fourth consecutive season-opening win, while Youngstown State falls to 0-1 for the season.
