Monte Cristo, a Victorian-era mansion located in the country town of Junee, New South Wales, is being put up for sale. Situated about 470 kilometers southwest of Sydney, this historic estate is widely recognized as Australia's most haunted house.
The manor has a vivid 140-year history filled with eerie tales and myths. Many visitors claim it is haunted by as many as ten spirits. Throughout the years, Monte Cristo has become a major tourist attraction, hosting guided tours and even overnight stays for those daring enough.
"I've had a hand on my shoulder," said Olive Ryan, who lived in the house for fifty years. "I've had my name called when I've been here by myself. It's nothing to hear footsteps on the balcony and you go out and there's no one there."
Olive Ryan shared her experiences in a 2015 interview, saying she often felt the presence of the mansion's original owners, Christopher and Elizabeth Crawley. Local lore suggests the Crawleys have haunted the property since their deaths in 1910 and 1933.
Olive’s son, Lawrence, who grew up in the mansion, also recalled feeling as though unseen eyes were constantly watching him within its shadowy halls.
The double-storey residence at 1 Homestead Lane features original fireplaces, ornate details, and even a grand ballroom, preserving the charm and mystery of the Victorian era.
