Paul Kelly, the renowned Australian singer-songwriter, has reached the milestone of seventy years and marks the occasion with a new album titled Seventy. The album features around twelve fresh songs, reflecting on this significant age.
Marty Duda from The 13th Floor spoke with Paul Kelly about the meaning of turning seventy and what lies ahead for him.
Marty: The album is called Seventy, you are 70, and I’m also 70. This shared milestone seems important. How do you feel about it?
“I’ve never been one to pay much attention to my age, but suddenly it affects how people treat you. I remember three big birthdays clearly. Forty felt like a significant one—it was when I truly felt like an adult. Also, 40 was the first time I noticed friends, colleagues, or people I grew up with starting to pass away. That happens a lot in the music business; unfortunately, many die young. So 40 felt like the moment when some of us keep going, and others don’t.”
Paul reflects on how his perception of age has evolved and how the reality of mortality has shaped his perspective, making the seventies a meaningful chapter of life.
Summary: Paul Kelly marks his 70th year with an album that reflects on aging, the loss of peers, and the significance of this life stage for an artist and individual.
