Ariarne Titmus, Australia's eight-time Olympic medallist, revealed that a major factor behind her retirement at 25 was the lack of time to enjoy moments with her family. She surprised many by making her year-long break from swimming permanent.
In a social media post and a recent interview with Stellar Magazine, the Tasmanian athlete shared her reflections:
“I’ve lived my life not caring that I never got to spend birthdays with my friends or attend family events because I had to be in bed for training.”
She added that she missed celebrating holidays with family, as her focus had always been on swimming.
Her partner Mack played a significant role in her decision:
“I met my partner right after the Olympics, and I wasn’t willing to return to the life I’d always known, one where I constantly put my family second.”
She acknowledged that swimming had always come first, but being an athlete requires a certain selfishness.
Ariarne Titmus stepped away from competitive swimming primarily to reclaim quality time with loved ones and embrace a life beyond the pool.
