FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY

Kentucky Prepares for Incoming Winter Weather

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for far southeastern Kentucky as snow showers and harsh wind chills are expected to begin the work week.

Weather Overview for Sunday

Scattered rain showers and the potential for strong storms will accompany a cold front moving across Kentucky this morning. Winds will increase, causing temperatures to rapidly fall into the 30s from northwest to southeast by afternoon.

By early evening, gusty rain showers will transition to snow as cold air follows behind the front.

Conditions Overnight

Snow showers and light flurries will mainly affect central and eastern Kentucky. Snow is expected to accumulate mostly on grass and elevated surfaces. With temperatures dropping into the 20s, bridges and overpasses may become icy. Wind chills will drop to near the teens by Monday morning, increasing the cold discomfort.

Monday Forecast

A low-pressure system will bring widespread snow showers and snow squalls to central and eastern Kentucky. Some areas may experience thunder accompanying the snow, known as “thundersnow.” Most locations will see light snow accumulation, but periodic heavy bursts could reduce visibility and create hazardous driving conditions.

High temperatures will remain near or below freezing, with strong winds making it feel like the upper teens or low 20s.

“It’s a wintry day, so please drive carefully.”

Author’s Summary: Kentucky is entering a challenging winter weather period with snow, strong winds, and dangerous travel conditions expected early this week.
