During a Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee hearing, Senator Jacky Rosen accused Republican Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH) of stalking her staff. The confrontation arose after Moreno admitted to collecting the vehicle identification numbers (VINs) of his Democratic colleagues' cars.
The hearing focused on President Donald Trump's nominees, where Moreno claimed he was attempting to expose hypocrisy among his Democratic peers. Moreno, who previously ran car dealerships, highlighted the cost of extra automobile safety features as part of his argument.
“Would it surprise you that I got the VIN numbers of every one of my Democrat colleagues’ vehicles and found that none of them bought any of the additional safety technologies on their cars?” Moreno asked. “So when you are actually shopping for a car with your own money, you don’t buy the technology, but we’re sitting here saying this should be mandated for everybody else’s cars.”
Moreno's admission sparked a broader debate about privacy rights and which party is responsible for the ongoing government shutdown, now the longest in American history at 36 days. Two senators spoke during the session but did not directly address Moreno's comments.
This exchange highlights escalating tensions within the Senate over privacy concerns and political accountability during a prolonged government shutdown.
