Western Australia is set to enhance public healthcare through three major hospital projects aimed at expanding patient care options.
Negotiations are advanced to acquire St John of God Hospital Mount Lawley, a private facility with 197 beds. From next year, it will transition into the public health system, providing up to 100 beds and 8 operating theatres for public patients.
The surrounding land offers potential for future hospital and aged care development.
A major upgrade is planned for the Royal Perth Hospital Emergency Department with a new six-storey building. Two floors will be dedicated to the new Emergency Department, designed to create space and enable relocation of other hospital activities without disrupting current emergency operations.
A new hospital will be constructed on an empty site adjacent to the existing Peel Health Campus. This approach enables quicker construction and minimizes disruption to current services.
After completion, the existing health campus will be repurposed for aged care accommodation.
"A brand-new hospital will be built on an empty site next to the existing location. This option allows the new hospital to be built faster with less disruption to current hospital services."
Author's summary: Western Australia is advancing healthcare by acquiring a major hospital, expanding emergency services, and building a new hospital to improve patient care and aged care capacity efficiently.
