ADB, IDA, AND SWITZERLAND PARTNER TO STRENGTHEN NEPAL’S DISASTER RISK MANAGEMENT AND BUILD CLIMATE-RESILIENT INFRASTRUCTURE

ADB, IDA, and Switzerland Partner to Strengthen Nepal’s Disaster Risk Management and Build Climate-Resilient Infrastructure

On November 5, 2025, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the International Development Association (IDA), and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement reaffirms their commitment to assist the Nepali government in enhancing disaster risk reduction and management and constructing infrastructure resilient to climate change.

Challenges Facing Nepal

Nepal is increasingly threatened by climate-induced hazards including floods, droughts, landslides, and glacier melting. These phenomena cause significant human and economic losses and lead to community displacements. Sectors dependent on nature, such as hydropower—which is crucial to Nepal's economic growth—are especially vulnerable.

Importance of Climate-Resilient Investments

"Investing in climate-resilient infrastructure and disaster risk management has never been more critical. These investments will not only strengthen communities and safeguard essential assets but also create jobs and foster long-term economic growth,"

stated Arnaud Cauchois, ADB Country Director for Nepal. He emphasized that improved coordination and technical collaboration among the partners aim to boost Nepal’s resilience against climate impacts, ensuring lasting benefits for the population.

Summary

This partnership focuses on enhancing Nepal’s disaster preparedness and climate-resilient infrastructure to mitigate environmental threats and support sustainable growth.
