Nine Entertainment has initiated job cuts across its Streaming and Broadcast division, resulting in around 50 redundancies. The restructuring primarily affects senior on-air talent and production personnel in multiple markets as part of the company’s ongoing cost-saving program.
Sources reported to Mediaweek that 9News Queensland sports reporter Jonathan Uptin will leave after his contract was not renewed. Uptin, a long-standing figure in Queensland media, has worked across various Nine stations during his career.
In Adelaide, Channel 9 newsreader Kate Collins was dismissed shortly after leading coverage of the station’s annual Christmas Pageant. The decision reportedly shocked Collins and sparked local criticism.
“I reckon the biggest story in Adelaide right now is the way poor old Kate Collins has been treated by Channel 9,”
“I mean treated by Channel 9 nationally. It’s a classic example of the head office in Sydney treating us like you-know-what and as a result there’s one fewer South Aussie on our TV screens.”
These remarks came from FIVEAA host David Penberthy, who publicly condemned the handling of Collins’ dismissal while also acknowledging the financial pressures currently shaping the television industry in 2025.
Nine Entertainment begins layoffs in its streaming and broadcast division, cutting about 50 roles including well-known broadcasters, amid a broad cost-saving restructure.
