Two more measles cases have been confirmed in Minnesota, bringing the state's total to 20. According to the Minnesota Department of Health, 15 of the cases were from exposures within the United States, 4 were imported cases, and 1 case has an unknown exposure.
Notably, 18 of the 20 measles cases in the state have been in children, with the two newly reported cases involving unvaccinated children in Ramsey and Hennepin counties. The children likely contracted measles from an unvaccinated adult.
In comparison to previous years, Minnesota reported 70 measles cases last year, but zero in 2023. Meanwhile, a large ongoing measles outbreak in Mexico has resulted in 22 deaths, with 4,879 confirmed cases reported through October 11.
The Mexico Ministry of Health reported 4,380 of those cases (90%) in Chihuahua state.
