Sweden Closes Probe into Latvia Cable Damage

Swedish prosecutors announced on Monday that they have closed the investigation into a Bulgarian ship that damaged a Baltic Sea cable connecting Sweden and Latvia in January.

The incident was ruled as an accident, but it was noted that the vessel had several technical faults. The cable in question is an underwater fibre-optic cable that links the Swedish island of Gotland to Ventspils in Latvia.

Swedish authorities had initially seized the Malta-flagged ship Vezhen after the damage was discovered on January 26. However, in February, prosecutors ruled out sabotage and released the ship.

The vessel had several technical faults.
