Buyer's remorse? Spotsylvania supervisors throw a change-up on stringent data center setbacks - Fredericksburg Free Press

Spotsylvania Supervisors Reconsider Data Center Setbacks

At least two supervisors now say that 1,000-foot setbacks for the industry are too strict.

Items on the Spotsylvania County Board of Supervisors’ consent agenda are typically approved in bulk with little or no discussion.

However, at a recent meeting, Supervisor Drew Mullins of the Courtland District pulled item 13, sparking an hour-long debate about design standards for data centers.

The conversation focused on required setbacks for data centers from residential property lines, schools, churches, hospitals, daycares, and parks.

In August, the board voted 7-0 to suggest 1,000-foot setbacks from those locations, but some supervisors may be experiencing "buyer's remorse," as stated by Supervisor Lori Hayes of the Lee Hill District.
