Roman Wells Unearthed in Hungary

Archaeologists in Zalaszentgrót, Hungary, have discovered Roman-era wells that may have been part of the ancient settlement of Maestriana.

The excavation, conducted by a team from Göcseji Museum, uncovered three Roman wells from the second century, including two with surviving internal wooden frameworks.

“Our most important find consists of three Roman wells from the second century, all located within a single excavation unit,” said archaeologist Lívia Simmer.

Pottery likely imported from Gaul and other objects were recovered from the wells, providing evidence of Maestriana’s trade networks.
