Concerns over Inhumane Treatment during Deportations
A Nigerian man shared his experience of being deported by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in September.
He described being awakened in the middle of the night, along with other detainees, and having shackles placed on their hands and feet.
“It was just like a kidnapping,”
the Nigerian man said in an interview, describing the use of full-body restraint suits called the WRAP, also referred to as “the burrito” or “the bag.”
- The detainees were told they were being sent to Ghana, despite none of them being from there.
- When they requested to speak to their attorney, the officers refused.
- The men were then straitjacketed and loaded onto a plane for a 16-hour flight to West Africa.
The Nigerian man is part of a federal lawsuit regarding this incident.
