Europe Reviewing Ways to Better Protect Patients
The European Commission will review proposals to strengthen its alert system, which notifies authorities of disciplinary actions against doctors, in response to an investigation by OCCRP.
The investigation found that some doctors were banned for serious offenses, including:
- sexual assaults
- botched treatments
- faking cancer diagnoses for profit
doctors banned in one country can still find work in another
The European Commission will look for ways to strengthen its alert system to prevent this, after identifying over 100 doctors who lost their medical license for serious wrongdoing in one jurisdiction but are licensed to practice in another.
