The Elgin City Council is discussing a ban that would prevent ICE agents from using city-owned property for detentions and other purposes.
Council members want to ensure the public understands the city's legal capabilities before approving any ordinance.
"We need to do something to show our community that we support them and to stand up to what's happening right now," said Councilwoman Tish Powell. "We can't just lay down and continue to let this stuff happen."
Councilman John Steffen expressed support for the broadest possible ordinance.
