Researchers found that patients with sleep apnea may be at greater risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
A prospective cohort study and Mendelian randomization were used to investigate the associations between sleep apnea and AMD, suggesting that managing sleep apnea may modify the risk for AMD.
They found strong evidence that sleep-disordered breathing may play a causal role in AMD pathogenesis.
Author's summary: Sleep apnea increases AMD risk.
