Google to Revive Shuttered Nuclear Power Plant

Google is collaborating with NextEra to reopen the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Iowa, aiming to power its data centers with the renewed energy source.

The Duane Arnold Energy Center, which was closed in 2020 due to damage from a summer derecho, is set to be revived with Google's partnership. NextEra had been searching for a partner to reopen the reactor for over a year.

Neither company disclosed financial terms of the deal.

The power plant was originally designed to generate 601 megawatts of electricity. Upon successful recommissioning, the renovated reactor is expected to produce an additional 14 megawatts.

Google has been expanding its use of zero-carbon energy sources to power its growing data center fleet, which makes this partnership a strategic move for the company.
