Abu-Ghazaleh warned that the industry is facing a serious crisis, which could lead to a shortage of bananas and a significant increase in prices.
- The Cavendish banana, the most widely consumed variety, is under threat from the deadly fungal disease.
- The Gros Michel banana, which dominated international markets until the 1950s, was wiped out by a different strain of the disease.
