Carrie Bickmore has been recognized as the 2026 Victorian Australian of the Year for her influential work in brain cancer research and advocacy. The award was presented at a touching ceremony in Melbourne, where her dedication to raising awareness and funding for brain cancer was celebrated.
Bickmore's commitment to brain cancer advocacy was sparked by a personal tragedy—the death of her husband, Greg Lange, from brain cancer in 2010. This heartbreaking event inspired her to bring visibility to the disease and encourage greater research support.
In 2015, she launched the charity Carrie’s Beanies 4 Brain Cancer Foundation, which has since raised more than $27 million for vital research and patient support. Her efforts have helped create national momentum toward better treatment solutions and stronger community engagement.
Furthering her mission, Bickmore established The Brain Cancer Centre in 2021 to bridge the gap between researchers and clinicians. The center focuses on developing innovative clinical trials and enhancing treatment outcomes for patients, securing over $45 million for projects nationwide.
“Brain cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among children and young adults under 40 in Australia.”
Carrie Bickmore’s recognition honors her transformation of personal loss into national leadership, channeling compassion into tangible breakthroughs for brain cancer research and awareness.
