Remembrance Day – Tuesday 11 November

Spelthorne Borough Council will host a Service of Remembrance outside the Council Offices in Knowle Green, Staines-upon-Thames, on Tuesday 11 November. The ceremony will honour all who gave their lives in service to their country, and the entire community is invited to join.

The service will start at 10:45 am. This year’s commemoration carries special meaning as it marks the 80th anniversary of both Victory in Europe (VE) Day and Victory over Japan (VJ) Day, celebrating the end of the Second World War.

Memorial Crosses and Local Tribute

Before the service, 429 memorial crosses will be placed outside the Council Offices in remembrance of the men and women from the Spelthorne area who died during World War II.

“The list of names was compiled by local military historian Phil Webb and his wife Eileen Webb, working with Spelthorne Museum.”

The research project, inspired by the museum’s publication Spelthorne Remembered WW1, extends the tribute to those who fell in the Second World War. The Webbs used sources from the Spelthorne Museum archives, local churches, war memorials, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and editions of the Middlesex Chronicle.

Feedback about the event is welcome at [email protected].
