Broadcaster and cancer fundraiser Carrie Bickmore OAM received the 2026 Australian of the Year award for Victoria at a ceremony in Melbourne on November 6. Since 2015, she has raised over $27 million to support brain cancer research.
In 2021, Bickmore established The Brain Cancer Centre, uniting top researchers to find a cure. The centre funds national research projects and runs groundbreaking clinical trials for brain cancer patients—the first of their kind globally.
"Brain cancer kills more Australian children than any other disease, and more people under 40 than any other cancer."
Bickmore’s late husband, Greg, succumbed to brain cancer in 2010, adding a personal dimension to her advocacy.
Advocate for elderly homeless Bryan Lipmann AM was honored as 2026 Senior Australian of the Year for Victoria. He founded Wintringham to offer safe housing and care for elderly, poor, and homeless individuals. Currently, Wintringham supports 3,000 people with accommodation and home care.
